AMPL submits comments on Wyoming's Migration Corridors
Last week Governor Mark Gordon (R) Wyoming, signed an Executive Order (EO) creating “migration corridors” in Wyoming. Prior to the signing of the order, AMPL reached out to the recreation representative on the Governor’s working group on this issue to ask if we could insert some words into the EO to protect the current recreational uses happening in these corridors. After sending a letter to the Governor (below) we were able to get that language inserted into the EO before it was signed. We hope this will be enough to protect recreation in the future.
As noted in our letter, recreation in Wyoming is a BIG business and getting bigger.
50,000 direct in state jobs
$1.6 billon in wages and salary
$5.6 billon in consumer spending
$514 million on local and state tax revenue
The future for our state and our local communities must include plans which support and encourage recreation not just for the revenue and jobs, but also for the joy, health and well-being it brings to the citizens of Wyoming. This is perhaps the most important aspect of the letter we sent to Governor Gordon - the fact that at least 75% of all Wyoming residents participate in recreation (recreation that does not include hunting, fishing or wildlife watching). This statistic is something we all know to be true because we all know our own love of recreation as well as that of our neighbors. Where I am sitting today, watching the snow fall outside my window, I see house after house in my sub-division accompanied by pole barns filled with campers, dirt bikes, ATVs, mountain bikes and snowmobiles. Part of the Wyoming way of life IS recreation.
And that’s why AMPL is here.
